He was diagnosed in January 2008 with pancreatic cancer and continued to fight everyday for his own life. In addition to his own personal fight, Swayze fought for the lives of millions of Americans and people all over the world fighting the same vicious battle. After his own diagnosis, he became a key presence in the fight for cancer. Most notably, he appeared at the Stand Up to Cancer event that was put on simultaneously by ABC, NBC, and CBS. At that event, Swayze emphasized the importance of finding a cure. "I dream that the word 'cure' will no longer be followed by the words 'it's impossible." said Swayze. "Together, we can make a world where cancer no longer means living with fear, without hope, or worse." After that monumental event, he continued to fight for cancer victims, writing an open letter to the Washington Post which urged world leaders to help with the fight against cancer. In the letter, he writes "Ever since I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2008, Ive been waging an intense, often hellacious battle but Im not alone. More than 1.4 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year. In the United States, one out of three women and one out of two men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes.
